Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Villa Vecchienna, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina - Pisa in Toscana
La villa situata in Val Carnia, da dove sovrasta il lago Cerchiaio, ha subito nel corso del tempo diverse vicissitudini. Appartenente in origine al Nobili della Leccia, passò nel 1186 ai Vescovi di Volterra che se ne servirono spesso come rifugio nelle dispute con i volterrani, tantochè in varie occasioni, a partire già dal 1236, fu necessario l'intervento del papa per mettere pace tra i canonici e il comune, obbligato a risercire il prelato per i danni arrecati al castello.
Altri danneggiamenti furono apportati nel 1447 dalle soldatesche del Duca di Milano e di Alfonso d'Aragona, finchè sulle rovine dell'edificio i vescovi costruirono la loro villa di campagna di cui rimasero proprietari fino al 1866, allorquando fu acquistata all'asta da conto De Larderel.
