Pisa is most famous for its leaning campanile, yet its other equally notable coups include its long maritime legacy dating to 1000 BC, its prized university and its status as the birthplace of the world’s greatest physicist and astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The Pisans also created one of the most beautiful squares in the world in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, Capannoli - Pisa in Toscana
La chiesa dedicata ai Santi Pietro e Paolo si trova nell’antico nucleo urbano di Santo Pietro Belvedere, in posizione panoramica. Tale edificio figura nel catalogo delle chiese della Diocesi di Lucca nel 1260. Fu elevata a Pieve nel 1680 e a Propositura nel 1720. L’attuale aspetto si deve ai restauri del 1955-1958. Il sobrio interno è diviso in tre navate da pilastri, con abside centrale; lungo le pareti laterali sono addossati quattro altari. Da notare i due grandi dipinti tardoseicenteschi con “San Gaetano” e la “Crocifissione”.
Nell’Odeporico del Mariti viene citato l’attuale fonte battesimale per il pregio artistico, datato 1686. Particolare è l’imponente campanile edificato, su una precedente torre, su disegno dell’architetto Bellincioni tra il 1881 e il 1883; solo nel 1907 ebbe un orologio.
