Pisa is most famous for its leaning campanile, yet its other equally notable coups include its long maritime legacy dating to 1000 BC, its prized university and its status as the birthplace of the world’s greatest physicist and astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The Pisans also created one of the most beautiful squares in the world in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). Its key component is the famous Leaning Tower, whose layers of heavy marble were constructed on a shifting subsoil foundation that has been the bane of Pisan engineers for more than 800 years. It seems that the tremulous soil underneath the Field of Miracles has exacted its price on the other buildings too, most notably San Michele dei Scalzi.

Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista - Pisa in Tuscany
It was erected between 1841 and 1845 on a pre-existing church, probably datable to the 15th century, while the old bell tower was left standing. Damaged during the earthquake of 1846, it was half-destroyed by a cannonade in 1944; the interior was completely restored in 1973.
It presents a single nave with beamed ceiling and an apse frescoed in 1955 by Stefano Ghezzani with scenes of the “Last supper” and “Christ in glory”. At the entrance are two stone holy water stoups donated to the church by the marques Andrea Carlotto in 1646. Above the second altar on the right are two wooden statues of “The Virgin Mary” and “The announcing angel”, two 16th-century works coming from the deconsecrated oratory of the S.S. Annunziata.
