La ceramica - Pisa in Toscana
I tradizionali centri di produzione di articoli in ceramica sono San Giovanni alla Vena, nel comune di Vicopisano, e soprattutto Montopoli in Val d'Arno, dove le origini della terracotta sembrano risalire all'XI secolo. La terracotta ha assunto le attuali caratteristiche negli anni venti, grazie alla tecnica sviluppata da Dante Milani. Molta della produzione attuale, realizzata seguendo la tradizionale lavorazione a mano, è impiegata per l'arredamento di giardini, parchi e ville.
L'unione di normali argille ricche di impurità ferrose con materiali refrattari resistenti alle alte e basse temperature ha consentito la creazione di un prodotto originale apprezzato in Italia e all'estero, soprattutto nei paesi del nord Europa. Lo stesso materiale viene oggi utilizzato per la produzione di mattoni, tegole e coppi.
