Le Mura e le Porte, Volterra - Pisa in Toscana
Uno dei più insigni monumenti dell’epoca comunale è costituito dalle mura, il cui tracciato e la cui costruzione sono stati oggetto di un approfondito studio. Della cinta muraria etrusca, iniziata a costruire nel VI secolo a.C. e terminata negli ultimi decenni del V secolo a.C., rimangono cospicui avanzi, in particolare il tratto settentrionale detto “della guardiola”, da cui si deducono successivi ampliamenti del IV-III secolo a.C. La prima delle due cinte medievali venne realizzata in pieno regime consolare, richiedendo circa un quarantennio ed il contributo di tutta la città, compreso il clero, all’incirca tra il 1200 e il 1240.
La seconda cinta comunale, consistente in un rafforzamento e completamento della precedente, è databile tra il 1260 e il 1266, epoca in cui le mura vennero munite di barbacani, di fossati e venne edificata la porta di San Francesco. Una volta completata la cinta risultava munita di diverse torri di vedetta, torri angolari edificate nei punti salienti del perimetro murario e torricelle per le sentinelle.
