Pieve di San Giovanni Battista, Pomarance - Pisa in Toscana
Risalente al secolo XII e testimoniata in periodo medievale, sorge su una necropoli etrusca: di notevole interesse sono alcune tombe del V-VI secolo a.C. rinvenute nel 1934 sotto la canonica. Nei primi decenni dell’Ottocento venne radicalmente modificata conservando dell’originale impianto solo la facciata a salienti che presenta, nella parte inferiore, cinque arcate cieche con archi poggianti su semicolonne con capitelli a più ordini con foglie stilizzate e il semplice portale, collocato in posizione centrale. Una cornice marcapiano separa la parte superiore, al centro della quale è collocata una apertura a semiluna. L’interno è a tre navate; in controfacciata un epitaffio ricorda il poeta umanista, di origine greca, Michele Marullo, deceduto nelle acque del fiume Cecina nel 1550. Sul fianco destro della chiesa è visibile la facciata del Battistero, caratterizzata da un portale ad ogiva in arenaria.
