Basilica di San Piero a Grado - Pisa in Toscana
La Basilica di San Piero a Grado, dove la tradizione vuole sia sbarcato San Pietro durante un suo viaggio dall’Egeo verso Roma, è sorta nel secolo XI sui resti di un tempio paleocristiano del IV-V secolo. Esempio suggestivo del romanico-pisano, costruita in pietra tufacea e marmo bianco proveniente da resti romani, la chiesa di San Piero a Grado è caratterizzata da un doppio ordine di absidi: tre sono rivolti a est e uno solo a ovest, con la porta principale sul fianco settentrionale.
I motivi ornamentali esterni sono costituiti da paraste, archetti ciechi e bacini ceramici di derivazione islamica. All’interno il triplice ordine è costituito dalle grandi colonne con capitelli e archi decorati in colore rosso; sopra di essi sono rappresentati tutti i Pontefici fino al secolo XV. Il lucchese Deodato Orlandi dipinse i “Fatti della Vita di San Pietro”. Antichi resti di un edificio sacro del periodo tardo-antico, presenti nella parte rivolta a occidente, sono stati riportati alla luce e sono oggetto di studio.
