Alabaster - Pisa in Tuscany
One cannot mention Volterra without thinking of alabaster working, an artistic handicraft which boasts a millennia-old history and tradition. The working of this warm and luminous stone, made up of hydrous calcium sulphate, has been handed down from father to son for thousands of years. Alabaster was used on a large scale in the Etruscan period in the making of cinerary urns, many of which – featuring finely worked bas-reliefs – are on show today at the Guarnacci Museum.
Alabaster working developed the most at the end of the 18th century, when many valuable works became universally known through the enterprise of “alabaster travellers”. In the characteristic workshops of the old city and in the numerous exhibitions visitors can still find little and great masterpieces of one of the highest expressions of Italian artistic handicraft.
