Ceramics - Pisa in Tuscany
The traditional ceramic production centres are San Giovanni alla Vena, in the commune of Vicopisano, and above all Montopoli in Val d’Arno, where earthenware production appears to date back to the 11th century. Terracotta assumed its present characteristics in the 1920s thanks to the technique developed by Dante Milani. A large part of today’s production is obtained according to traditional manual procedures, and is used in the decoration of gardens, parks and villas.
The combination of conventional clays rich in ferrous impurities with refractory materials capable of resisting high and low temperatures has made it possible to create an original product which is appreciated in Italy and abroad, and in particular in northern European countries. The same material is used today in the production of bricks, tiles and jars.
