Leather - Pisa in Tuscany
The first shoemakers’ guild was established in Pisa in the 13th century. The centuries-old handicraft tradition has been handed down to the present day, particularly in communes of the lower Arno River Valley such as Santa Croce sull’Arno, Castelfranco di Sotto and San Miniato. Leather and skins are still bought directly from the local tanneries, which offer high quality standards.
Firms employ an average of 10-12 workers and all footwear working stages, from the making of the individual components to the finished product, are still almost entirely carried out by hand. In addition to footwear, local firms are renowned for the production of soft leather bags and other accurately finished goods. Leather masters carefully choose, treat and work the hides in the trendiest shapes and colours, thus contributing to the success of the “big names” for which the items are produced.
