Seaboard - Pisa in Tuscany
The coast stretches along the Tyrrhenean Sea including the towns of Pisa, San Giuliano and a small part of Bocca di Serchio. The entire coast to the south of the Arno is built up by the towns of Marina and Tirrenia. At Tirrenia the beaches are still quite extensive and are protected by a strip of pine trees. In late spring rock roses and brooms greet the first swimmers with their many pink and yellow flowers. Marina di Pisa: A resort which came into being in the mid-nineteenth century, Marina di Pisa evokes the artistic period connected with the names of Amedeo Loti, Nino Costa and the 'Macchiaioli', the poetry of Gabriele d'Annunzio and the paintings and engravings of Giuseppe Viviani. The varied historical-artistic testimony of Marina is also to be found in the liberty style motifs of several villas, as well as in the Basilica of San Piero a Grado, built on the spot where St. Peter disembarked on his way to Rome. In the offing is the Torre della Meloria, where the Pisan Republic was defeated by its rival Genoa, and, towards Livorno, the Torre del Marzocco, built by the Florentines during the fifteenth century. The scenic backdrop of the Apuan Alps, the long curve of San Rossore and the Natural Park enclose Marina in a picturesque landscape. The mouth of the Arno is equipped for pleasure sailing and the sandy beach has many bathing establishments. The tradition of the best seaboard cuisine is widespread.
Tirrenia: From the mouth of the Arno, the beach reaches the pine forest of Tombolo and then the sand continues along the sea for more than ten kilometres. In Tirennia, immersed in nature, one can enjoy a quiet get-away, comfortable and varied stay in anything from a family pensione to a luxury hotel to a camp-site. Furthermore, there are many opportunities to engage in sports and recreation, thanks to the presence of a C.O.N.I. training centre which offers various activities including golf, hiking, sailing, equestrian sports, under-water exploration, and canoeing. Marina di Vecchiano: On the borders of the San Rossore Estate, on the other side of the mouth of the Serchio, is the beach of Marina di Vecchiano. It is reached by passing through the estate of the Salviati dukes which surrounds a fine period villa. The free beach is equipped with an ample car-park.
