Casa torre Hotel Victoria - Pisa in Tuscany

The tower, located at the rear of Hotel Victoria, is only visible from the hotel's inner courtyard, to which it is attached. The building was rectangular in plan and had rooms that, on the lower floors, were probably skirted by wooden galleries running along all four fronts. This tower house is believed to date back to the mid-11th century and is therefore one of the oldest examples of Pisan medieval civil architecture. Located near the river and close to the walls that surrounded the city in the High Middle Ages, the tower also served defensive purposes, as did other tower houses standing on the southern border of the "Civitas".

The topography of the area was radically altered at the beginning of the 20th century during the construction of the large Hotel Victoria, completed in 1916. Of all the buildings that had been in the area since the Middle Ages, only the 11th-century tower house survived. Incorporated into the hotel building together with the attached brickwork structure it still dominates the entire complex.
