Casa torre Lanfreducci - Pisa in Tuscany
The tower is rectangular in plan and is mostly built of squared Verrucana stone. The upper brickwork section is the result of a partial remodelling carried out in the 14th century. It should be noted that the south front, with the exception of the upper part, has been incorporated into the Palazzo "Alla Giornata". The oldest part of the tower is believed to date from the 12th century, but the whole building shows evident traces of remodelling carried out during the Middle Ages and later. In the Middle Ages the tower house and the surrounding buildings belonged to the Chapel of San Biagio alle Catene, documented since 1030, whose remains are still visible in the courtyard of the Palazzo del Rettorato (chancellor’s palace).
The Lanfreducci family, who had resided in Pisa since the beginning of the 13th century and belonged to the faction that controlled the Ponte Nuovo (new bridge), created a residence by joining pre-existing buildings dating from different periods. The definitive remodelling of the building was promoted in 1594 by Francesco Lanfreducci, who commissioned the architect Cosimo Pugliani to build the facade of the palace. Still visible under the portal is the motto of the Lanfreducci family, "Alla Giornata".
