Casa torre Minati - Pisa in Tuscany
A classic example of a 13th-century tower house embodying the Pisan building style in the Middle Ages, with tall stone supporting structures and several tiers of arches. In addition to being designed for defensive purposes, tower houses fulfilled commercial and civil functions on the different floors. This tower house was the property of the Lanfranchi family, and Michelangelo Buonarroti is said to have lived here.
The Minati Mazzarosa complex is the result of the aggregation of at least eight residential units dating from the mid-12th to the 14th century. The four oldest units (last quarter of the 12th century) look onto the Via Santa Maria and are the result of the rapid urbanization of the area inhabited by the members of the furriers’ guild. Over the centuries the complex has undergone several alterations, notably the insertion of large windows between the pointed arches of the facade in the mid-19th century.
