Fortezza Nuova e Giardino Rosselmini-Scotto - Pisa in Tuscany
The Lungarno Fibonacci is characterized by the Fortezza or Cittadella Nuova (new fortress or citadel), thus named to distinguish it from the Cittadella Vecchia (old citadel) located across the river, at the opposite corner of the city. The fortress was built in 1512 by the architect Giuliano da Sangallo on pre-existing fortifications (1468) with a view to preventing further rebellions by the Pisan population against the Florentines.
Of the original fortress only the outer walls and a massive bastion on the south side are left standing. In the middle is a large garden with trees, which is ideal for relaxing and walking. It was made at the end of the 18th century by Domenico Scotto, a rich ship owner from Livorno. In the 1930s it became a public garden named Giardino Scotto.
