Sito archeologico "Le navi antiche di Pisa" - Pisa in Tuscany
Eighteen Roman ships of different sizes have been discovered to date near the San Rossore railway station. The finds suggest the presence in the area of an important port of call for cargo ships bound for Rome. The discovery of the Roman wrecks was made early in December 1998 while work was being carried out for the foundations of the new control centre of the Tyrrhenian line of the Ferrovie dello Stato. Eight of the eighteen ships discovered so far are being excavated and appear to be virtually intact in their wooden structure.
Additional finds include a perfectly preserved breakwater palisade, the structures of a quay and a wharf, and a huge quantity of miscellaneous items. The numerous finds are of exceptional interest to both the scientific community and the general public. As is often the case with archaeological finds, the ships and cargoes of San Rossore represent both a magnificent opportunity and a severe test for those who are in charge of the site. The Tuscan Archaeological Commission is directly in charge of the excavations. It coordinates the different professionals involved, from archaeologists to surveyors, from computer experts to restorers.
