Torre Guelfa o della - Pisa in Tuscany
The tall Torre Guelfa (Guelph Tower) is located in one of the most charming areas of Pisa, the Cittadella Vecchia (old citadel), which bears witness to centuries of history. When the Florentines first took Pisa (1406), they radically transformed the structures of the republican shipyard and built what was later to be called the Cittadella Vecchia (old citadel), to distinguish it from the Cittadella Nuova (new citadel), i.e. present-day Giardino Scotto, built from 1440 at the opposite corner of the city. In 1944 the whole area was badly damaged by allied bombing, and the Torre Guelfa was completely destroyed.
It was only in 1956 that it was rebuilt and restored to its original appearance. Recent restoration work has allowed the municipality of Pisa to reopen the tower to the public, offering tourists and residents a charming panoramic view of the city. Coats of arms from various Pisan buildings are exhibited in the tower. Some of them belonged to the families of the Florentine captains and commissioners who succeeded one another in the government of the city. Notable among these is the coat of arms of Lutozzo di Lutozzo Masi, general commissioner from 1644 to 1646.
