Abbazia di San Zeno - Pisa in Tuscany
The old abbey houses all the year exhibitions of contemporary art and musical concerts. It is situated near the Piazza Santa Caterina.
The Abbey of St. Zeno is characterised by a stratigraphic group of architectonic styles, as the façade attests. It has very ancient origins and is situated in a place originally called “alle grotte” (caves) for the great number of ruins of ancient Roman Pisa. It was a Benedictine abbey which later passed to the Camaldolite Order; at the beginning of the 15th century it underwent several alterations. The façade presents a portico decorated with Romanesque-style geometric elements. Behind the church is the old Porta San Zeno (door), also known as “Porta Monetaria” (Monetary Door) in the 13th century because it is situated near the mint (the real Porta Monetaria is walled-up and is situated to the south, now visible only from outside).
