Basilica di San Piero a Grado - Pisa in Tuscany
The Basilica of San Piero a Grado, where, according to tradition, St. Peter landed during a voyage from the Aegean Sea to Rome, was built in the 11th century on the ruins of an early Christian temple of the 4th-5th century. A striking example of the Pisan-Romanesque style, built of tuff stone and white marble coming from Roman ruins, the church of San Piero a Grado is characterised by a double order of apses, three of them facing east and only one facing west, with the main entrance on the northern side.
The external ornamental elements consist of pilasters, blind arcades and Islamic ceramics. Inside, the triple order consists of big columns with red decorated capitals and arches, representing all the Popes until the 15th century and St. Peter’s life painted by Deodato Orlandi from Lucca. Ancient ruins of a sacred building, present on the side facing west, have recently been brought to light and are now under consideration.
