Chiesa dei SS Jacopo e Filippo in Orticaia - Pisa in Tuscany
The name “Orticaia" (nettle-bed) probably derives from the territory invaded by nettles or a place rich in vegetable gardens (in Latin Horticarium). The Romanesque-style church (12th century) was modified several times, while the low bell tower was built in the 17th century directly on the wall of the apse.
The façade, made up of stone in the lower part and of bricks in the upper one, seems to be asymmetric due to the presence of a square window on the left of the door. The interior has a single nave with Baroque frescoes attributed to the Melani brothers, among which stands out the “Conversion of St. Ranieri” (which probably took place just in this church).
