Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro - Pisa in Tuscany
Attested since 1104, it was known with the toponym of “Vechiano Major” in 1199 to distinguish it from the near Church of San Frediano. Throughout the centuries the building underwent several alterations, visible in the use of different lithic materials and particular architectonic elements, such as the arcades and the single lancet windows of the northern side.
In front of the building stands the high bell tower, whose construction began in the second half of the 12th century and ended in 1385, as an inscription attests. It displays elegant double-lancet and three-mullioned windows. The interior with a single nave, modified in the 19th century, houses two 12th-13th century capitals, a memorial inscription of 1309 and two interesting 18th-century holy water stoups.
