Medicean Aquaduct - Pisa in Tuscany
The Medicean aqueduct begins from the San Rocco reservoir in the Valle delle Fonti at Asciano and terminates at the northern end of Pisa's city walls. The aqueduct is 6 kilometres long and consists of a raised conduit supported by 934 evenly spaced, gradually lowering, stone-and-brick arches. It was designed in the 16th century by Grand Duke Ferdinand I de' Medici, "Magnus Dux Etruriae".
There are several reservoirs in the Valle delle Fonti which collect water from the sources and convey it to the main (San Rocco) reservoir. Its construction was committed to the architect Raffaello Zanobi of Pagno, who began laying the foundations of the arch pillars between 1588 and 1592. In 1594 Raffaello Zanobi fell ill, and construction was entrusted to the engineer Andrea Sandrini, who completed the work in 1613. The construction of the aqueduct was funded with receipts from the salt tax and the sale of pines. The aqueduct conveyed rain water from the Pisan Mountains to the city fountains for over three centuries.
