Rocca di Ripafratta - Pisa in Tuscany
The fortification appears to date from before the year 1000. Being the hub of the vast defensive system of this key border area, it was always disputed between the cities of Pisa and Lucca. High above the village stand the imposing walls that enclose the core of the fortification; still visible are the brickwork sections added by Sangallo in the 15th century, contrasting with the dark stone of the medieval construction.
A single access gate, still surmounted by the coats of arms of Pisan and Florentine podestà, leads to the drill-ground, at the centre of which stand the ruins of the keep, a former watch tower forming the oldest part of the castle. The inner yard also contains the remains of the constable's residence and the accesses to the vaults and the water cisterns. Two corner towers complete the defensive system. Around the fortress stand a few square watch towers.
