Chiesa della Santissima Concezione - Pisa in Tuscany
Built in 1647 by the engineer Stefano Maruscelli, the small church stood on the right shore of the river Morto where there was a niche with an image of the “Madonna”, today kept above the high altar, who miraculously rescued the population from a flood.
The austere appearance of the brickwork exterior, refined by the portico on the façade, contrasts with the decorations of the interior, consisting of stuccos, golden surfaces and a valuable group of 18th-century frescoes with “Scenes of Mary’s life and allegoric figures”, a result of the collaboration of Giovanni Battista Tempesti and Mattia Tarocchi from Pisa. To be noted are also the three frontals representing “The theological virtues”.
