Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta - Pisa in Tuscany
Consecrated in 803 by the bishop of Lucca, in the presence of the Pisan bishop and the imperial legates, the church was rebuilt between the 16th and 17th century and completely restored in 1861-62, perpendicularly to the pre-existing building. The façade is what remains of the medieval structure: enclosed by the tympanum, it displays a simple portal provided with archivolt and architrave.
An architrave of uncertain origins, datable to the end of the 11th century, is carved in the right side of the building: it was probably made in Pisa or Lucca and represents a man holding an elaborate vegetal branch, with real and fantastic animals. The interior with a single nave keeps the 19th-century modifications.
