Pieve di Santa Maria e Giovanni Battista - Pisa in Tuscany
Attested since 1069, the austere parish church stood along the old piedmont road that linked Pisa and Lucca; the near monastery of San Paolo and many other suffragan churches were under the authority of the parish church. The unusual plan with two naves, of which only the greater is provided with apse, is the result of an incomplete enlargement of a pre-existing building carried on between the 12th and 13th century.
The imposing bell tower (the old Torre Guerriera) is separate from the church and was rebuilt after being damaged during the Second World War. The bare interior houses two important 14th-century works: a wooden “Crucifix” belonging to the Pisan School and a wooden panel representing the “Virgin and Child” by Neruccio di Federigo.
