Certosa Monumentale di Pisa - Pisa in Tuscany

Hermitic and cenobitic life, or rather solitude and community life, are interpreted by the Certosa’s two basic architectural elements: the cell and the church. The Certosa, as we see it today, was completely rennovated and transformed during the Baroque period and then further enlarged up to the end of the XVIII century when the most worthy artists of the sevenhundreds enriched it.

Master artisans from Carrara worked at the façade and inside the Certosa which is richly embelished with frescoes, polychrome marble and wood works. The three cloisters – the prior cloister, the capitular cloister and the great cloister – are decorated with upright arcades and with silently suggestive ambulatories. In the centre of the Certosa a fountain divides the Renaissance garden which leads to the cells of the Carthusian monks who were famous for their patience and for the care they gave to all their productions, whether in artistic, scientific or literary fields.

The last monks left the Certosa in 1972 and since then, thanks to a complex restoration, visitors can see the cells (each with its own little garden and workshop for manual chores), the cloisters, the porticos, the refectory, the church, the church chapter and the library where numerous manuscripts and ancient texts can be found. You can also visit the guest-rooms, the oil mill, the granary, the chemist’s and the Prior’s and the Granduca’s rooms.
