Molino Gangalandi - Pisa in Tuscany
The ancient Galgalandi Mill includes the Palazzotto Bonafalce, today called Chini-Martini, and the whole area containing the ensemble of buildings has been taken over by the Soprintendenza, which has carried out accurate historical inquiries on the area. In September 1288 there was a bloody encounter between the archbishop Ruggieri’s Pisan Ghibelline forces (who had reconquered the Castello Minore, today known as the Oasi del Sacro Cuore) and the Guelfs from Lucca barricated in the Castello Maggiore.
The battle was fought on the pebbly shore of the river Zambra and was such that the bridge spanning the river in that spot is called he “Ponte dei Morti” (The Bridge of the Dead) in memory of the numerous casualties suffered by both sides. Inside the mill there is a collection of instruments, implements and tools connected with milling and the world of peasantry. Prof. Chini has collected and cataloged all these items in order to make a museum. In the past the Town of Calci thought of asking for EC funding to create the the “Via delle Acque” (the Water Path) along which the museum was supposed to be located. However, as yet there has been no official response.
