Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Nevi - Pisa in Tuscany
Embodied into the ancient castle of Panicale, along the river Riomagno, the church was originally known as “Santa Maria in Valle Verde”, then as “Santa Maria ad Nives” and finally as “Santa Maria dell’Ascensione”.
Built in Pisan- Romanesque style probably between the 11th and 12th centuries, it keeps important ornamental elements and an elegant apse divided by pilaster strips and surrounded by arches without columns resting on sculpted shelves. The interior has a single nave and a presbyterate with three arcades. According to old traditions, the church was built by the sect of the “Liberi Muratori” (free bricklayers), the forerunners of the Freemasons, as the square and the compasses sculpted on the architrave of the side portal attest.
