Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta - Pisa in Tuscany
The ancient church, enlarged in 1628-1644, was widely modified in the 18th century. The façade displays an elegant portal with interrupted gable, surmounted by two windows and an oeil-de-boeuf with a fresco representing “Our Lady of the Assumption”. The interior reflects the rococo style; among the ornamentations stands out the painted coffered ceiling (1749).
The inner restoration is linked with St. Valentine’s cult, whose body has been kept in the church since June 6th 1699. On that occasion, the building was embellished with 17th-18th century altar canvas, among which stands out “St. Valentine’s Apotheosis” by Pietro Dandini, “St. Valentine’s Martyrdom” by Antonio Puglieschi and “St. Valentine’s death sentence” by Tommaso Redi.
