Chiesa di Santa Cristina alle Pianore - Pisa in Tuscany
This area was situated by the side of Padule di Bientina and in 1592 it was transferred by the Municipality of Santa Maria a Monte to the grand duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici with the intention of reclaiming the surrounding soil and building a large agricultural settlement.
A villa for rural use, still existing today, and other adjacent buildings were built for this purpose. In addition, a religious building, consecrated the 10th of May 1596 and dedicated to Santa Cristina di Lorena, the grand duke’s wife, was erected on the ruins of the old Romanesque church added to the Benedictine monastery of San Frediano in Tolli.
