Chiesa Collegiata di San Lorenzo - Pisa in Tuscany
Founded in the 13th century, it was enlarged in Renaissance style and gravely damaged during the Second World War. It presents two side aisles and a nave with stone columns, a rectilinear apse flanked by two chapels and stone altars with “The mourning for the dead Christ”, the only 17th-century canvas survived.
Noteworthy is “the crucified Christ”, which draws on the iconographic model of the Saint Face of Lucca, an important example of wooden sculpture of the late 13th century. A 14th-century “Virgin Mary”, carved in painted wood, and an “Angel” in glazed terracotta, are worth mentioning. At the end of the apse is a polychromatic marble altar-frontal that frames the statue of St. Lawrence (1709).
