Palazzo del Vicariato, Montopoli - Pisa in Tuscany
Of exceptional interest is the Palazzo del Vicariato, the former seat of the vicariate and then of the offices of the Podestà of Montopoli, situated in the square of the village and used today as a hotel. In the Middle Ages the building was probably the seat of the bishop’s power, but at the beginning of the Florentine supremacy the rulers, as was their custom, put their stone or terracotta coats of arms on the façade, some of which are still visible.
Recent excavations in the subsoil of the square have brought to light perfectly preserved cisterns of brickwork which collected the meteoric water from the overlooking fortress to be used by the citizens of Montopoli during the periods of drought or in case of siege of the castle.
