Cinta Muraria - The Old Walls of Cascina Near Pisa in Tuscany
As is attested in a document dated 1293, the inhabitants of Cascina erected a ring of walls to defend their village from the Pisans and the Florentines, who were frequently at war. In the 14th century the walls were modified and reinforced by raising their height by means of Ghibelline crenellations and by adding twelve towers. The brickwork loopholes were evenly spaced about 2 metres above ground level. The different building materials attest to the various construction phases – Verrucana stone was used for the first layer, miscellaneous materials for the second and third layers. A wide moat encircled the walls, which were only pierced by two gates along present-day Corso Matteotti, the Porta Pisana (Pisan Gate) and Porta Fiorentina (Florentine Gate), both demolished after 1889.
