Badia di San Savino - Pisa in Tuscany
The Benedictine, later Camaldolite monastery of Lombard origin collapsed in 1122 and was rebuilt in 1134. The church has a Latin-cross plan and presents a large vaulted transept, an apse and massive pillars on the corners. On the northern limb is the huge rectangular bell tower. Noteworthy is the soaring spire of the whole building, accentuated by the distribution of the pilaster strips, visible in particular on the façade. The façade rests on a high baseboard, is delimited by two angular pillars and divided by pilaster strips linked by arches without columns resting on shelves. The same decoration is to be found also in the apse. The structure on the two sides of the building is slightly different since it shows later modifications.
