Pieve di San Verano - Pisa in Tuscany
Probably built between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century, its façade is divided into five blind arcades, while the sides are characterised by small arches without supporting columns. The bell tower, built in 1885, reflects the medieval structure. The interior, divided into two side aisles and a nave, was modified many times; the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption was added in 1580, whose interior houses three canvas and ”Mary’s Assumption” by the 17th-century painter Jacopo Vignali from Florence.
Noteworthy are a Crucifix of the 18th century, a “Virgin and Child with Saints” by Neri di Bicci (1464) and two 13th-century paintings belonging to the Pisan School: “Stories of San Nicola di Bari” and “Virgin and Child”. The painting with the Virgin is an object of veneration among the citizens of Peccioli: when someone was ill in the community, the women of the village gathered in the church and prayed for his/her recovery and the Virgin Mary, usually covered with a veil, was shown to the parishioners.
