Museum of Russian Icons, Collezione Bigazzi - Pisa in Tuscany
Peccioli houses the first Italian museum of Russian icons, displayed in the rooms of the ancient palazzo Pretorio. The museum also houses sixty icons ranging from the XIX to the XX centuries and coming from the collection of Francesco Bigazzi, a journalist of Pecciolese origin who was a foreign correspondent in Poland and Moscow for years, and donated to the town by the journalist himself.
The museum tour, entitled “Signs of Saint Russia” opens with a first section dedicated to the oldest icons representative of various Russian iconographic schools, from the Moscow school to those of Kiev and Kazan. The exposition continues through to the more modern icons, those from the Bigazzi collection, which represent a kind of icon unknown to the Italian public mixing ancient spirituality with a modern mentality.
