Castello e torre campanaria, Lajatico - Pisa in Tuscany
The old castle is located in the upper part of the village. Judging from the structure of the castle walls, the settlement appears to date from the Middle Ages. The front entrance has a pointed arch. At the side of the archway is an emblem of the Pisan cross. Further up on the right is a stone lion with the fleur-de-lis of Florence. Under the doorway there is a double lancet window surrounded by six coats of arms.
The only one that is still visible depicts an eagle and is supposedly the emblem of the Gotti Lega family. In the small entrance hall there are a few stone scenes representing a battle between Pisa and Florence. On the left stands the bell tower, characterized by a double lancet window and a square iron structure supporting the bell. The castle was sold to the Florentines by Pietro Gaetani in 1405, and was destroyed by Florentine troops in 1435 during the conflict with the maritime republic of Pisa.
