Chiesa di San Casciano, Lajatico - Pisa in Tuscany
The church was built in the 13th century and then modified with the addition of the façade. In the 19th century it was restored and enlarged, besides being embellished with three marble altars. The façade displays four plastered half-columns in the nave; the interior is very luminous and houses a circular vault at the end of the nave. The high altar, destroyed during the war, was rebuilt in 1957. On the façade stands the bell tower with four bells, built at the end of the 19th century both with local sandstone ashlars and bricks.
The present-day structure is neoclassical with two side aisles and a nave with semi-circular apse and cylindrical columns surmounted by ionic capitals. In the church square a gate leads to a courtyard where there is the Parsonage. Under the three-arch colonnade is the access to an 18th-century loggia. The reconstruction of the pipe organ finished in 1965, while at the end of the church a tombstone reminds the visitors of the stay of Pope Pius IX as well as of Pope Urbano VI, who in 1300 stayed overnight in Lajatico with his court during a travel from Genoa to Perugia.
