Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, Lajatico - Pisa in Tuscany
The parish church was built at the beginning of the 16th century in the place of an older one situated in the castle, of which only the portal is visible today. In 1509 the bishop of Volterra consecrated the church as a parish priest’s house. The church underwent several alterations over the centuries, among which the most significant took place at the beginning of the 19th century when the northern wall was demolished and the roof and the bell tower were rebuilt.
In 1816 the denomination of “parish priest’s house” changed into “Deanship”. The ceiling of the single-nave church was embellished in 1816 with paintings representing the four Evangelists; the first Tronci organ dates back to 1846. The interior of the church houses a beautiful high altar of Serena stone and a valuable Crucifix of the 17th century, recently restored. The small church of the Compagnia, a lay charitable institution of 1641, is adjacent to the parish church.
