Etruscan Acropolis and Roman Theatre, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
The Roman Theatre is located in the Vallebuona archaeological area, near the medieval walls. Systematic excavations begun in 1950 on the initiative of Enrico Fiumi have proved that the construction of the theatre dates from the 1st century BC. Still extant are nineteen rows of seats in the central and lower sectors, which were built on a natural slope. The semicircular orchestra was originally clad with marble. Still extant are also the pulpitum and part of the structures and of the marble columns of the frons scenae. In a later period, when the structure was used for a different purpose, public baths were built in the area of the portico.
The Etruscan Acropolis at Piano di Castello is located in the archaeological area of the Enrico Fiumi Park. It presents a complex superimposition of structures belonging to the Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods. The area contains the remains of a system of cisterns, including the so-called Augustan pool, and two buildings in the shape of a temple that have been named A and B. The former is rectangular in plan and dates from the 2nd century BC; the latter dates from the 3rd century AD and has the appearance of a Tuscanic temple with a podium and a colonnade.
