Castello di Berignone o della Torraccia, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
The remains of the 10th-century Bishops’ Castle (also known as “Torraccia”) stand on a high conglomerate buttress (231 m) dominating the confluence of the Botro al Rio and Sellate streams. The ruins attest to the protracted violent struggle between the Volterran bishops and the commune of Volterra in the Middle Ages. The castle was the seat of an important Volterran mint, and was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
