Medicea Fortress, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
The fortress stands on the summit of the Volterran hill and is one of the greatest examples of Renaissance architecture in Italy. It consists of two sections – the 14th-century Rocca Vecchia (old fortress) and the 15th-century Rocca Nuova (new fortress), joined by long bracket curtains.
The former, built by the Duke of Athens and subsequently altered by Lorenzo the Magnificent, has a trapezoidal plan and a semielliptical tower in the middle; the latter, with a square plan, four side towers and a central tower (known as the "Maschio", i.e. "keep"), was built by Lorenzo the Magnificent after the sack of Volterra and the alum war of 1472. The two fortresses have always been used as prisons.
