Le Mura e le Porte, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
A stretch of the Etruscan walls below Santa Chiara is characterized by an irregular structure with small stones in the lower part and larger ones in the upper part (possibly belonging to the extended ring of walls built in the 3rd century BC). Another stretch located in the Balze area features large superimposed blocks.
Worthy of note is the so-called Arco Etrusco (Etruscan Arch), a gate that was part of the walls built in the 4th century BC. The outer jambs are Etruscan originals, while the arch was remodelled by the Romans, who decorated it with three heads (now in poor condition) that were probably intended to protect the city. The masonry was remade in the Middle Ages.
