Badia dei Santi Giusto e Clemente, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
The Camaldolite abbey and church were built in 1030 near the church of San Giusto al Botro which kept the relics of Saints Giusto and Clemente and engulfed by the landslip in the 17th century. A cultural and artistic centre, the abbey housed works by Giotto and a rich collection of manuscripts.
Although it has been abandoned for many years, you can admire the elegant cloister of the 16th century and the monastic refectory adorned with frescoes relating the life of St. Giusto. A Romanesque apse and the imposing medieval bell tower are all that remains of the church, reduced to a ruin in 1895.
