Chiesa di San Dalmazio, Volterra - Pisa in Tuscany
Founded in 1511 by the Benedictine nuns, it presents a Volterran stone façade attributed to Bertolomeo Ammannati: it is delimited by two angular pillars, while in the middle there is an elegant portal consisting of fluted quadrangular pilasters and an architrave bearing the denomination of the complex.
The interior keeps the 18th-century structure: a single nave with a single chapel on each side, the presbyterate on a higher level and the nuns’ choir above the nave. Decorated with white stuccos, with putti playing on the frames or flying on the tympanums or framing the counter-façade, the church keeps a “Deposition from the Cross” by Giovan Paolo Rossetti from Volterra. An elegant stucco and gold decoration frames the fresco of the dome depicting the “Apotheosis of St. Dalmazi, the bishop of Pedona”, executed by Ranieri del Pace in 1709.
