Torre dei Belforti o Torre Civica - Pisa in Tuscany
The tower stands solitary on the highest ground of the village. Built of black stone ashlars and decorated with white stone bands in its lower portion, it stands 28 metres high (another 2-3 metres are underground). The tower was built around 1340 by the Belforti family of Volterra, from whom it was expropriated when they were defeated politically.
The tower was badly damaged during World War II, and at the end of the 1960s it passed to the Milanese family of Jesi, who restored it partly thanks to the reopening of the Selagite mines to the south of the village. The Belforti Tower is not the only one left. There are also three small circular towers remaining from the 14th-century town walls – one in the north-west sector in the Via del Mandorlo, another in the area of the old cemetery, and the third in the Via Vannocci.
