Pieve di San Giovanni Battista a Querceto - Pisa in Tuscany
Built in the 13th century, it substituted an older parish church which stood in the open country. It has a ridge roof and is characterised by regular rows of small sandstone ashlars. The austere portal is surmounted by a majolica of the beginning of the 20th century manufactured by Manifatture Ginori.
The interior, provided with a single nave and beamed ceiling, was enclosed by a semi-circular apse, today replaced with the quadrangular choir, with a jutting transept characterised by a double arcade on each side. The capitals of the columns present different decorations, ranging from the large aquatic leaves to the caules. The capital of the right half-column shows the symbols of the three Evangelists, Mark, Matthew and John. During the restoration work of 1971 a small wooden cross datable to the 7th-8th century was found, which is now in the diocesan museum of Sacred Art in Volterra.
