Pieve di San Giovanni Battista a Casaglia - Pisa in Tuscany
Casaglia is situated on a hill of cypresses that looks onto via Salaiola connecting Volterra with the sea. The parish church is documented in the papal tithes of 1274 and in the Libra Cleri of the Belforti Synod of 1356.
It was dispossessed of the territory at the end of the 14th century and reduced to a “transferable” rectorship with a non-resident parson for the whole 16th century. Later it passed to the patronage of the Espinassi family, whose heirs rebuilt in 1858 the church and the parsonage in neo-Romanesque style with two side aisles and a nave.
