Mineralogical Museum, Montecatini, Val di Cecina - Pisa in Tuscany
The Mineralogical Museum was inaugurated as a rightful acknowledgement to this town where, in 1888, a firm, later known as Montedison, was founded and given the town’s name, initiating the area’s mining activity.
The town still retains proof of this leading activity for its economy which during the years of its greatest production gave work to hundreds of families: there are still excellently preserved ‘boccapozzi’, a portable winch method of transporting the product to the surface, tunnels, paper documents (accountability papers) and, underground, even a small miners’ chuch with a Madonna bas-relief by the della Robbias. Most of this material will be housed in locales in the old Palazzo Pretorio. Friday, July 5 2002, the first section was inaugurated, the restructured part of the ‘Pozzo Alfredo’ which is just below the man-made Margone Lake which is used for rinsing the material.
