Rocca di Sillano - Pisa in Tuscany
To reach the fortress, which is visible from a considerable distance, drive along road SS 439 past Pomarance and then turn off towards San Dalmazio and Montecastelli Pisano. The tower stands at a height of about 500 metres and dominates the valleys of the Cecina river and the Possera and Pavone streams. It was built in the 13th century by the bishops of Volterra.
In the 15th century, while it was in Florentine territory, it was reinforced and, together with the neighbouring Montecastelli, repelled the troops of Alfonso of Aragón. Originally the fortress had a triple ring of walls. Today only the central structure with the tall tower is left standing. The Sillana Fortress stands at the eastern end of the municipality of Pomarance. From Volterra, drive towards Pomarance, turn off for San Dalmazio (Itinerario dei Ruderi, Route of Ruins) and follow the signs to the Rocca (fortress) and the Pieve (church). The fortress can be reached by walking uphill for about 1 kilometre.
